NHDD Makes Headlines in the Midwest

That’s right; National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) participating organizations must be working over time to get the word out because their efforts are paying off tremendously.

For today’s NHDD and Advance Care Planning News Round Up, we found an NHDD mention in the blogosphere...

In a recent post titled ‘Gearing Up for National Healthcare Decisions Day,’ Angela Morrow, RN—and author of About Palliative Care Blog—exalts the importance of advance care planning, and tells a little bit about her personal advance directive experiences.

Plus, as we scanned our news aggregators, we stumbled across not one, not two, but five news stories about NHDD in publications all over the Midwestern United States. So we've devoted this round up of NHDD mentions to that particular region...

In the Northwestern most part of the Midwest…

“Experts encourage sharing health care wishes,” a SCTimes.com story, highlights the efforts of The Central Minnesota Council on Aging (CMCA) to promote awareness of the need for advance care planning during NHDD 2011.

In the ‘mid-Midwest’…

The Northwest Herald reported that there is a “National Healthcare Decisions Day event planned at MCC.” According to the article, McHenry County, the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition (CECC) Northwest Branch will sponsor a free screening of a film in support of the NHDD initiative.

In the Southwestern most part of the Midwest…

Local St. Louis online publication The Vital Voice’s article “Health & Resources Fair- April 16,” Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) Metro St. Louis Executive Director Sherrill Wayland expounded on the importance of NHDD in her community. “We must take additional steps to complete Health Care Directives and Living Wills to ensure that our partners and loved ones have the legal authority to direct our care should we not be able to make the critical decisions needed during a time of medical crisis,” Wayland said.

The Kansas City Star’s press release section boasts a press release with the title ‘Law firm marks National Healthcare Decisions Day.’ The release goes on to say that ‘In the Kansas City area, members of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), will be providing free information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with Missouri and Kansas state laws.’

And, rounding out our Midwest finds is a piece out of the Northeastern most part of the region—Hospice at Home’s effort to spread the word. In a press release titled “Hospice at Home Highlights National Healthcare Decisions Day,” the hospice’s Community Relations Representative Terri Dotson said “As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known.”
